How to Contain Mold During Remediation

Mold loves water and warm temperatures. If you have recently suffered water damage due to flooding, mold contamination is sure to follow. An environmental specialist should inspect your home in Palmer Township, PA to determine the extent of the damage and to remediate the mold.
What is Remediation?
Most folks think that mold can be removed from their home, but actually mold spores are present everywhere. The levels at which they normally exist in dry conditions do not pose any health issues. When wet and humid conditions occur, mold contamination can become a problem. Remediation is the process of getting those mold levels back into the safe range.
How is Mold Contained?
Mold can spread quickly, so while your house is in the process of mold remediation, there are important steps that can slow the growth.
Reduce the humidity and temperature in your home. Turn the heat down to below 65 degrees Fahrenheit and turn on your dehumidifier immediately. If the humidity and temperature are lower outside than inside, you can open several windows. In the summer, it’s best to turn on an air conditioner, if possible.
Moldy items should be removed right away. Smaller items can be put in plastic bags and frozen since mold can’t survive in freezing conditions. Furniture and other large items that contain mold should be taken outside until a professional can inspect them. If the items are destroyed and are small enough, place them in garbage bags. Consult with your garbage disposal personnel to see if they will accept the moldy items.
Make sure shelves and cupboards are clean. Mold can remain on surfaces, so use white vinegar to wipe down the areas.
Purchase a HEPA air filter to remove the majority of mold spores in the air. Run fans to circulate the air once it has been filtered.
Speed is the name of the game when dealing with mold contamination. The quicker you tackle the issue, the sooner you will get your house back in order.
