What Is Water Damage Restoration?
Water damage restoration is the complete water cleanup process from beginning to end. Water damage restoration specialists focus on restoring the property and all objects and belongings within it to their original condition.
The following are the steps taken after water damage:
1. Calling A Water Damage Restoration Expert
After ensuring that occupants of a building are safe and their whereabouts are confirmed, emergency services may be contacted. Water damage restoration professionals guide initial steps for safety. After documentation, contents of the property can be moved to protect them from further damage.
2. Inspection and Assessment
The location of water damage is identified and the severity is assessed by water damage restoration specialists. After locating the source of water causing damage, it must be stopped if possible. Based on the size, extent, and source of water damage the class or category of water damage is ascertained. Based on this, restoration specialists formulate timelines and budgets that can be expected for water damage restoration.
3. Water Removal
Submersible pumps, truck-mounted vacuums, or portable wet or dry vacuums, are used to remove standing and surface water. What equipment is used depends on the amount of water in the building. This is called water removal. Specialists like SERVPRO of Easton, Bethlehem, and Whitehall have advanced equipment for quick water removal. The longer water or moisture is left unattended in the building the more the risk of mold growth. So water removal is very important. The property is assessed again following water removal to determine the residual moisture levels. During this inspection, restoration specialists decide if building materials like drywall, furnishing like carpets, or flooring can be salvaged or need replacement.
4. Dehumidification and Drying
Water damage restoration professionals can dry areas that are difficult to access. They use industrial-quality dehumidifiers and fans to dry moisture. Drying and dehumidification will help prevent mold growth. They also help to limit residual moisture that causes materials like drywall and wood to warp and break.
5. Clean and Sanitize
The next step is to clean the area by spraying, wiping, dry cleaning, and wet cleaning. Several cleaning techniques may be used like foam, abrasion, or immersion cleaning. At this stage items that are not salvageable must be discarded.
6. Restoration
Finally, water damage restoration personnel execute repairs to restore the property to a pre-damage condition. Damaged floors and walls are replaced if needed, and repainting is done as required.
Several terms are used to refer to water damage restoration. The following are some of the terms used in relation to water damage restoration:
a) Water Remediation
All actions taken to remedy or reverse water damage come under water remediation. Cleaning, drying, sanitizing, and restoration of damage due to exposure to water are all part of water remediation.
b) Water Mitigation
Water mitigation is done to prevent further damage due to water in a building. Water removal or extraction, drying, removing damaged objects and building materials, cleaning and disinfection, using a tarp to protect the building, boarding up windows, etc are all processes in water mitigation.
c) Water Removal
Using high-velocity air movers and industrial dehumidifiers to remove water is water removal. SERVPRO of Easton, Bethlehem, and Whitehall uses submersible nad gas-powered pumps to pump away high-level water. Their truck-mounted and portable extraction units ensure efficient water removal.
d) Water Extraction
Using specialized equipment to remove large quantities of water in an external environment is termed water extraction.
e) Water cleanup
The removal of water, sanitization, and drying of areas affected by water is water cleanup. Especially when the source of water is considered to be contaminated (like in flood damage), this is vital.

2. Know The Location Of Shut-Off Valves

3. Store Inventory Safely
At least the valuable items must be stored in an area that is least likely to get flooded or affected by water damage. This will cut the costs incurred by water damage. Storing essential documents in watertight containers that protect them from water damage.
4. Facility Inspection
Commercial buildings or properties can be large. They still need to be inspected periodically for any problems that can cause water damage. Bigger establishments or large businesses have a facility management department that looks into this.

Very small amounts of water that cause very little damage can be dealt with and cleaned up by staff. However, if there is excess water intruding a professional water damage restoration company needs to be called in. Time is crucial as immediate action minimizes further water damage. Business owners should be aware of hazards that lead to water damage. It is easy to expect storms or bad weather to lead to water damage. But water damage is commonly caused by unpredictable causes that do not come to mind immediately.
Causes of commercial water damage
Malfunctioning Sprinkler Systems: Sprinkler systems can malfunction especially if they are outdated, faulty, or neglected. Broken or malfunctioning sprinkler systems can cause water damage.
Burst Pipes: Pipes can burst to cause water damage in residential or commercial buildings. It is important to ensure water keeps flowing when the temperature falls so that the water does not freeze. When water freezes it expands, which can cause pipes to rupture. This can lead to flooding in a building within minutes.
Broken Equipment and Appliances: Appliances and equipment can break or develop faults. When sinks, toilets, washing machines, dryers, etc back up, they can cause water to leak. In commercial buildings, these leaks can go unnoticed depending on when and where the leaks occur.
Sewer Lines Back-Up: Sewer lines can back up, and there is a risk of the building being exposed to black water. This can be toxic and damage furnishing and devices. Business owners must be vigilant about maintenance in the building to help prevent commercial water damage.
HVAC System Malfunction: HVAC systems are essential in commercial buildings to maintain a comfortable temperature and air quality. Clogging or leaking occurring in HVAC systems can cause water damage. HVAC systems need regular cleaning and maintenance to prevent this.
Damaged Windows: Rainwater and moisture can seep into buildings through windows that are broken or need to be recaulked. Even if the water is not enough to cause flooding, it can cause water damage to building materials like drywall, and lead to mold growth.
Roof Leaks: When roofs are old or sustain damage, they let in elements they are supposed to protect buildings from. Leaky roofs can result in water damage during heavy rains or snowstorms.
Natural Disasters: As mentioned above, extreme weather can lead to flood damage or water damage.
Businesses can take steps to avoid commercial water damage. Though commercial property insurance can offer financial protection, water damage can force businesses to close or relocate, if necessary, for a while during water damage restoration. Despite the caution, commercial water damage can happen. In such instances, quick and thorough water damage restoration is essential. Delaying water damage restoration can worsen the extent of water damage and lead to complications like mold. This is why hiring a company to handle commercial water damage restoration is helpful.

SERVPRO: Reasons Why Water Damage Restoration is Not a DIY Project
4/15/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO explains why it is best to use professional water damage restoration services, tools, and technologies to recover after water or flood damage.
Top Reasons to Hire Water Damage Restoration Companies in Easton
With all the DIY resources online, you may be wondering why to hire a commercial water damage restoration expert in Easton. If you have suffered water damage at your commercial property, attempting to clean and restore it yourself can do far more damage than good.
Here are the top reasons hiring a professional water damage restoration service is the best option to get your property, life, and operations back on track.
Hidden Moisture
Water is a swift and powerfully destructive force. While it is possible to get the surface level water removed using DIY techniques, it very rarely is actually dry. The hidden moisture that remains continues to cause damage. Professionals use powerful extraction and drying technologies, to ensure that the water is gone and that the property is safely returned to its normal condition.
Experts Can Identify Extent of Damage
One of the most important parts of water damage restoration is understanding how water damage works and identifying areas of damage. Materials like wood, carpet, and insulation can soak up the water and take it deep below the surface and into walls in a matter of minutes. Water restoration experts use water sensors to detect moisture and then extraction, drying, or removal techniques to solve the problem.
Proper Clean-Up Safeguards Health
Without proper water restoration, the water that remains can continue to pose health and safety hazards. Moisture breeds mold, bacteria, and fungus, and can continue to break down other materials within the structure.
Professionals Have the Right Technologies
Anyone that has had extensive water damage knows that a mop and bucket is no match for the job. Once water is introduced to the environment, getting it out fast is the first order of business. The longer it sits, the longer it has to get deep into walls and flooring where it can cause health hazards and structural damage. Professionals have the team and technologies it takes to remove the water as fast as possible.
The Clean-Up Process Can Pose a Health Hazard
There are three types of water in water restoration—clean, gray, and black water. While clean water does not pose any health risks, gray and black water can carry disease pathogens. Water restoration companies are equipped with high-grade extraction vacuums, pumps, dehumidifiers, fans, filters, and the proper safety equipment needed to remove water that may pose a health hazard.
Get Correct Insurance Payout
Hiring a professional restoration company makes it easier to meet all of the insurance requirements needed to get a proper payout. Professional water damage restoration companies in Easton can help ensure that the damage is properly cataloged which helps insurance companies process claims.
It Saves Your Time and Money
A water restoration service has the experience and tools needed to get your property back to normal as quickly as possible. Faster recovery means you can resume life or operations much more quickly. It also means that water has less time to cause damage, which equals decreased costs.
Professional Water Restoration is Fast
Water damage needs swift attention or the remaining water can cause even more damage to the home or business. Standing water breeds bacteria, breaks down material, creates a breeding ground for mold, damages walls, and more in a matter of hours. SERVPRO of Easton understands that emergencies don’t always happen during business hours and offers 24/7 emergency service so you get the water restoration help you need fast.

Maintaining the Plumbing on a Rental

Water damage in Churchville, PA.
Maintaining the Plumbing on a Rental
While leasing or renting a house or apartment can be a great source of extra income, maintenance can be a significant source of overhead expense. The most effective cost-reducing measures are usually the most timely, so inspect and maintain your polybutylene plumbing and other water fixtures with the following advice.
1. Material Concerns
Polybutylene pipes are no longer permissible under the provisions of most United States building codes. While they were somewhat common in installations made from the 1970s to the 1990s due to their cost-effectiveness and flexibility, they tend to present leakage issues over time. This appears to occur due to various chlorine compounds that cause progressive damage, especially at joints. If you own a rental property in Churchville, PA, ensure that any such plastic or resin pipe materials are in good condition.
2. Upkeep and Tenants
An overworked plumbing system can cause problems even if more standard materials such as copper or PVC were used in construction. Advise tenants only to flush biodegradable materials approved for your septic tank or city sewer. From time to time, plunging or chemical drain cleaning may be necessary due to the accumulation of non-soluble substances such as lipids or hair. Ideally, mechanical removal of clogs with a drain snake will lead to less damage than caustic cleaners. Enzyme-based drain cleaners are also available as an alternative.
3. Unavoidable Problems
Sometimes water damage comes from an external source, such as weather-induced basement flooding or invasive tree roots. In these cases, it may be prudent to contact a qualified flood restoration specialist once the source of the water leakage has been repaired. Professional services can help you dry sensitive materials affected by a flood and reduce the risk of mold problems in the future.
Legacy building materials like polybutylene don’t have to be a headache if properly inspected and maintained. Prevent costly downtime and keep tenants happy by remembering the above guidelines.
Understanding Smoke Damage After a Fire

Commercial fire restoration in Bangor, PA.
Understanding Smoke Damage Following a Fire
Fire can be an underestimated and dangerous entity. But what most people don’t know is that the colorful flames are often not the cause of most damage during a fire. It is estimated that smoke does three times as much destruction as the blaze that can eat through a commercial building. While the inferno burns the structure, the soot and smoke damage send tendrils of destruction throughout the structure in the most unexpected ways. To completely remove the offending smell fire can leave behind in Bangor, PA, the smoke and soot must be eliminated from the most unanticipated places.
Understanding Problems
While property can be damaged by more than a blazing firestorm it can be difficult to identify where to find the heaviest concentrations of smoke filled areas. Knowing the following can help you find where smoke and soot damage have collected within the building.
- Airflow patterns
- Temperature
- Immediate environment
In other words, recognizing what has potentially been damaged by smoke can be more a calculation than a guess.
Unexpected Damage
Experts in fire repair and restoration are often trained to investigate unexpected areas where smoke damage can collect. This includes closets, drawers, window ledges, and behind draperies. The professionals often learn that the hot, soot and smoke-filled air rapidly invades the cooler air inside, under, and behind objects. That is because as the molecules heat, they can be sucked into unheated areas as soot collects onto unexpected surfaces causing considerable damage.
Smoke also collects in unexpected places such as under nail heads, behind pictures, in brick crevices, inside light fixtures, and under glass covers of tables and desks. Office plants can similarly conceal smoke as it clings to leaves, moss, and plastic containers. Smoke can also penetrate the paint on walls, lacquer on furniture, and wooden doors and window frames.
Mysterious Smoke
Restoration after a fire can take time because smoke damage can often be more extensive than the flame or water damage. In the end, smoke is typically neither random nor erratic. Physics can help restoration specialists take the mystery out of smoke cleaning and get the building open quickly.
Protect Your Commercial Property From Mold Damage

Mold growth in a Stockertown, PA property.
Protect Your Property From Further Damage
Mold is known as the king of fungus because it can grow almost anywhere on earth. With over 100,000 different types of mold worldwide, it can thrive on organic surfaces of all types. The fungus is a frenzied eating machine created by nature to break down and recycle anything that was once alive. Yet surprisingly, mold sends out beautiful spores in dozens of colors including yellow, green, and black mold varieties. There is only one thing other than food that mold needs to complete a lifecycle, and that is water.
Playing Hide and Seek
If your commercial property in Stockertown, PA, has a moisture problem, you probably have mold. To eliminate the cause of the mold and stop the spread of spores, you need to stop the water source feeding the mold colonies. If your building experienced a flood of some type recently, invisible water damage could still be lurking. Water can easily seep under
- Cabinets
- Flooring
- Wallboards
The hidden water can easily provide spreading fungus with ample liquid for colony development. Additionally, wet insulation can feed mold colonies for months after a pipe leak occurs. In fact, weeks or months after the flooding, red, green or black mold can begin to make an appearance in areas you thought were dry.
Killing Water and Mold
To kill the mold, you need to remove the source of the water. Most water removal and mold remediation groups are trained in how to locate and identify hidden molds. Once the fungus is found, the cause of the water can be identified, and mold cleanup can begin. If floorings, cabinets, or lumber sections have been badly destroyed by the fungus colony, the building supplies may have to be replaced because the actual structure of an object can be ruined by mold.
Protecting Building and Property
Rather than attempting to remove yellow, purple, or black mold on your own, call in a team of specialists and have them identify the source of the water. Not only can you protect your property from further mold damage, but you may also be protecting the structure of your building.
How To Stop Sewer Smells From Getting in Your Building
6/27/2021 (Permalink)
Inspect your drain lines.
Steps To Keep Sewer Smell Out Of Your Building
If a sewer smell permeates your commercial building in Churchville, PA, it can be bad for business morale. Not only will your workers hate coming in, but your customers might start to avoid the store too. Thankfully, you can turn to a commercial cleaning team to help you get rid of the bad smell.
However, you don't have to let it get that far. You can take some preventative steps to keep the bad smell of the sewer out of your building from the start.
1. Check on the toilet trap. You might not be that familiar with the function of your toilet trap. This u-shaped pipe connects your toilet's drain to the rest of the sewer line. The bend of the plumbing traps a small amount of wastewater. The wastewater actually works to block sewer gas from coming into your building. Have a plumber or another professional inspect the trap regularly to make sure it does not dry out.
2. Clean plumbing vents. Your building is probably equipped with plumbing vents designed to release sewer odors to the outside rather than back into your space. If these vents were to get blocked up, you may start to notice a sewer smell inside. Regularly cleaning the vents helps reduce the chances of a blockage.
3. Inspect drain lines. The drain lines of your sinks and toilets are supposed to carry sewage away from your building. However, cracks and holes can form in this piping. When this happens, the sewage may release underneath your building or even inside of it. This backup can leave you with a smelly mess.
Proper maintenance and vigilance can help you keep your business from acquiring the feared sewer smell. If a sewage disaster does happen, you need to address the problem as quickly as possible to avoid a lingering smell on your property.
Prepare Your Business and Employees for Potential Fires

Commercial location suffered from fire damage
As a business owner in Bangor, PA, you know the unexpected can happen. Although you may not know what kind of emergency may affect your operations, planning ahead by establishing a contingency plan can help calm a chaotic situation and ensure the safety of everyone in the building. It also makes it easier to keep the business afloat while repairs are being made by a certified fire damage and restoration company.
Business Plan
Planning ahead to protect employees, processes, and vital business components is important for any business. They should be developed with key personnel to ensure all the bases are covered. Although every business is different, key ingredients of a contingency plan should include:
Assess Risks: Identify vulnerabilities unique to your business and the risks associated with the location. Knowing these are essential to formulating the rest of the plan to ensure limited business interruptions.
Understand the Hazards: After the assessment, you can better categorize the likelier hazards that you may be faced with this. Grouping them into categories, such as natural incidents or civil disruptions, allows you to create a general plan for each kind.
Identify Critical Process: The processes essential to operations should be ranked. This allows for the most important operations to resume first after the incident.
Establish a Crisis Management Team: Ensuring you have a team in place ready to handle anything is vital to managing a crisis. All responsibilities should be clearly spelled out and discussed with all involved.
Emergency Plan
One of the most important components of any planning needs to be an evacuation plan. This should account for any potential people on-site, including visitors, emergency responders, and employees. The plans should also involve:
- Establishing an emergency team to direct the evacuation.
- Ensuring there are primary and secondary exit routes. Discuss the routes and have them clearly posted.
- Communicating the plan with employees and conducting regular drills.
Although there are always unknowns, having a contingency plan enables a business to navigate them safer and easier.

2. Owner Responsibility. A commercial insurance company takes a hard look at claims that are caused by neglect. For example, if mold is allowed to grow in a building for months or even longer, the insurance provider is likely to deny or limit the scope of a claim. For this reason, if your company experiences a water issue, often a precursor to mold growth, or if mold is found, it is important to take quick action. A local mold mitigation company in Churchville, PA, can help you get an outbreak under control.
3. Mold Remediation. A professional team has the experience and knowledge to eradicate mold colonies from your building. Technicians will locate the presence of mold, identify the cause of the outbreak and work to restore your building to its original condition. A quality remediation company can help you document expenses and damages for a mold insurance claim.
4. Professional Restoration. In addition to causing musty odors and air quality issues, mold also can break down the structural integrity of materials such as drywall and carpeting. Commercial insurance will often pay for this restoration expense. To find out more, contact your insurance agent for information on your coverage for mold concerns.
Can Office Electronics Be Cleaned After a Fire?
1/12/2021 (Permalink)
Do not use electrical equipment that has been exposed to heat
The owner of a commercial property affected by fire may weigh the advantages of attempting to have office electronics cleaned and restored or replacing these appliances, computers, and devices to avoid an electrical fire. The following pointers are helpful for determining whether experts may be able to restore device functionality or retrieve important data.
Assess the Level of Damage
Electronics exposed to direct flame or very high temperatures that show signs of charring or melting may not be salvageable. Seek a professional opinion about items exposed to the following forms of indirect damage:
Content restoration professionals specializing in computer cleanup and recovery can determine whether the functionality of a computer or any other device can be restored or data can be retrieved and transferred to replacement electronics.
Address Heat and Smoke Damage
Temperatures in a building fire peak at thousands of degrees. Electronics exposed to direct flame are likely to be ruined, and internal components may actually fuel an electrical fire. Computers and devices that are not directly affected may suffer damage but still be candidates for cleaning or recovering data.
Advance With Cleanup or Data Recovery
It may be possible to use electronics that have been shielded from immediate exposure to fire. Have content cleaning professionals who specialize in restoring digital equipment inspect these devices before use, as smoke damage can cause an internal film to form and cause short-circuiting, overheating, and an elevated risk of another fire in the future.
The degree of damage that is caused by exposure to direct flame, high heat or soot, and smoke will determine whether content restoration experts can restore the functionality of electronics or retrieve important data from storage media to transfer over to replacement devices. Commercial property owners and occupants should exercise caution with fire-damaged electronics to reduce electrical fire risks at a structure in Churchville, PA.
3 Tips To Keep Your Property’s Pipes From Freezing

Prevent water damage from frozen pipes in your business
3 Tips To Keep Your Property’s Pipes From Freezing
The last thing you want as a business owner is to open your building on a cold morning and find that your pipes have frozen. Preventing water damage from frozen pipes means being proactive and readying your facility for the oncoming winter in Bethel, PA.
1. Check Your Valves
Shut-off valves are the fastest way to stop water flow, so they need to be checked to make sure they are operating properly and can be shut off quickly in case of an emergency. They are your first line of defense against flooding and help minimize water cleanup for the commercial restoration company you hire for repairs. Inspect valves on your property weekly and repair or replace any that are showing signs of wear.
2. Inspections
Routine inspections will keep your pipes flowing and more fortified from extreme cold. Inspect your plumbing system regularly for any leaks or corrosion. Making these small repairs will help keep your pipes strong in the winter and water damage at bay.
Autumn roof and HVAC system inspections are important, too. Plumbing runs throughout your building, so having your roof in good condition will help keep the cold weather away from them. Testing your HVAC system ensures that while the roof is protecting your pipes, your furnace can keep them warm. Your facility should be kept above 50 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the risk of freezing.
3. Protect External Pipes
Remember that you might have pipes that run outside of your facility or in indoor areas that are not heated. To avoid broken pipes in these places, insulate them yourself with pipe insulation that can be found at almost any hardware store, or you can hire a plumbing expert to help you.
Water damage is a problem anytime during the year, but even more so in the winter. By being prepared, you can protect your pipes from the bitter cold and keep your facility up and running.
Preventing and Thawing Frozen Pipes
11/4/2020 (Permalink)
Insulating exposed pipes is a good way to prevent them from freezing
As the temperature drops, many businesses will experience water damage from ruptured pipes. Keeping the pipes at your Easton, PA, commercial property from freezing is key to protecting your business this winter.
How To Prevent Frozen Pipes
Some pipes are more vulnerable to freezing than others. Any uninsulated pipe in an unheated area is at high risk. Pay close attention to pipes in the following areas:
- Exterior walls
- Basements
- Cabinets
Insulating exposed pipes is a good way to prevent them from freezing. In other cases, you can insulate the room where the pipes are located to help minimize temperature variance.
Sometimes the temperature drops quickly, and business owners find themselves scrambling to prevent water damage from broken pipes. If you haven’t had time to properly insulate exposed pipes, newspaper or towels can act as temporary insulation. Leave cabinet doors open to allow heat to reach those pipes. Don’t lower the thermostat at night, and consider letting warm water run through the pipes overnight.
How To Thaw Frozen Pipes
If you notice that water pressure is low, you may have a frozen pipe. The first thing you will need to do is locate the frozen pipe. Turning on all the faucets in the business and seeing which ones have weak or no water flow can help you narrow down the potentially frozen pipes. Leave the affected faucet(s) on while you work. Check the most vulnerable, i.e., coldest, areas first. Remember that there may be multiple frozen pipes. When you have located the affected pipe, you can thaw it out using a hair dryer. Other heat sources, such as heating pads, will also work. Be sure not to use a heat source with an open flame.
Having a plan to thaw out frozen pipes and prevent freezing in the first place is important for all business owners. Unfortunately, there are times when pipes do burst and cause water damage. In those cases, a certified restoration service can help with the water cleanup.
Different Causes of Commercial Water Damage

Commercial water damage
Work Place Water Damage is Restored by SERVPRO
When business owners visualize water damage, they often picture a massive storm wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days at a time. It is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms.
However, many business owners or space renters forget that storms and severe weather aren't the only causes of floods and water damage. Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.
1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems
Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.
2. Damaged appliances and equipment
This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that have appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.
3. Broken pipes and plumbing
Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails, water damage could be the result.
4. Backed up sewer lines
This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.
If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Easton, Bethlehem & Whitehall will get you back up and running again, call us anytime 24/7 at (800) 455-9453. We will return your business back to normal and make it "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Hats Over the Years
”Commercial Buildings Are Not Large Houses!”
Our local SERVPRO franchise has several team members specifically trained in Commercial Loss scenarios and this is one of the first things they learn when attending an Institute Of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) class.
Drying and restoring commercial properties can be very complex and pose a multitude of situations not typically found in residential properties. Some of the differences between commercial and residential properties are obvious, such as size and uses, but others may not be that obvious like intricacies in HVAC systems, and complex electrical systems.
Other differences in commercial and residential structures that may concern a restorer will be things like public access, multiple stakeholders, construction materials & building codes, as well as the potential for increased safety issues in a commercial property.
Our certified Commercial Drying Specialists know the differences between commercial and residential properties and can “change hats” instantly from one to the other with very little effort. This ability to understand and adapt to these differences is one of the many things that help our restorers stand out in the restoration industry. It is also the reason that the majority of municipalities, utility companies, property management firms, healthcare facilities, and school systems in our area trust SERVPRO for all their restoration and cleaning needs.
SERVPRO is also on the cutting edge of document drying science and have the ability to dry, clean, sanitize, and restore documents once deemed unsalvageable a few years ago. This can save a business thousands of dollars and major headaches if these documents are ever needed to be produced.
Another advantage SERVPRO of Easton, Bethlehem & Whitehall has over other restoration companies is that although our local franchise can produce most commercial jobs on our own, if we get a job that is beyond our local capabilities, we can have our Corporate Large Loss Division assist us with staff and equipment to handle any size disaster.
Knowing the differences between residential and commercial properties is very important in our industry and if a restorer does not understand those differences, it could lead to catastrophic results from safety issues, or much higher cost of a commercial project than is necessary. Trust your business to the pros in the know, SERVPRO of Easton, Bethlehem & Whitehall. We are standing by 24/7/365 for ALL your restoration and cleaning needs.
Four Fire Preparation Strategies

Train employees in fire safety
4 Keys Aspects Of Fire Preparation
A Stockertown, PA, business fire can be very destructive. Fortunately, there are ways to prepare your business. The following are four key aspects of fire preparation:
1. Maintain Fire Extinguishers. Fire extinguishers and other fire-suppression equipment, such as fire blankets, are your best shot at keeping a small fire from growing into a large destructive fire. Make sure you have at least one extinguisher within 75 feet of all locations prone to fires, such as kitchens or areas with combustible materials. Keep extinguishers up-to-date and clear of any obstructions so that they can be reached easily.
2. Train Employees in Fire Safety. Employees should know the location of all fire extinguishers and exit routes. Hold fire drills routinely so that everyone is familiar with the protocols in the event of a business fire. Make sure there are appropriate evacuation routes for disabled employees.
3. Maintain Fire Alarms. Smoke detectors and fire alarms can minimize fire damage by alerting occupants to danger early. These systems should be checked routinely. Make sure the detectors and alarms are not blocked and are easily accessible. Change the batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions. If your alarm system is connected to the building's power supply, make sure the backup batteries are properly maintained.
4. Routinely Inspect Electrical Systems. Electrical fires are very common. Have your electrical system professionally inspected every five years unless your electrician recommends a different frequency. Only allow licensed electricians to perform work in your building. Additionally, make sure the area around electrical panels is clear for a minimum of three feet. Make sure outlets do not have any exposed wiring or other noticeable problems. Do not use extension cords permanently. Have a system in place for employees to report any electrical hazards they notice.
Even the most conscientious owner can suffer a business fire. If you need help restoring your commercial building, a certified restoration service can get your business back to normal quickly and safely.
Where Do Floodwater and Storm Water Come From?
3/6/2020 (Permalink)
Storm water damage in Forks Township, PA
When water damage impacts your business in Forks Township, PA, there can be a lot of confusion following the event. One of the biggest challenges that business owners face after a storm is determining whether the damage can be classified as storm or flood damage. This key distinction makes a significant difference in terms of what type of insurance you’ll need and how professionals will help restore your building. Here’s what to know about where floodwater and storm water comes from.
Where Floodwater Originates
According to most insurance policies, there’s a clear difference between storm damage and flooding. This difference mainly concerns where the two forms of water come from. For example, floodwater typically describes water that comes from the following sources:
- Rivers
- Dams
- Lakes
- Creeks
- Levees
Water that originates from these natural sources is normally considered floodwater if it escapes its original source and causes damage to your business.
Where Storm Water Originates
Damage from storm water is very different from flood damage. When looking into your insurance policy, you may notice that there are a clear set of guidelines regarding the origin of storm water. In most cases, storm water refers to water that comes from drains as well as rainwater. When water from a rainstorm or thunderstorm accumulates and doesn’t know where to go, it may target your commercial building and lead to severe water damage. Many people mistakenly consider this to be a result of a flood, but it’s generally categorized as storm damage according to insurance providers and restoration experts.
The line that separates flooding and storm water may seem like a very fine one. However, by learning where each type of damage comes from, you will gain a better understanding of how the water damage in your Forks Township, PA, business can be classified. Whether you’re dealing with storm or flood damage, be sure to rely on emergency restoration services to revive your commercial building.
The Facts About Mold and the Odor it Causes
1/7/2020 (Permalink)
Mold often has a pungent, musty odor
There are a lot of things you never want to see in your office building. Mold is certainly high on the list. As if the sight of this fungus isn't enough, the smell can be unpleasant too. In fact, it's often the odor that gives mold away. You may not easily spot it, especially if it's inside the walls or ceiling, or under a sink. Mycotoxin release is a big reason why the putrid smell permeates the area.
When and Where it Grows
There's nothing magical about the appearance of mold in Easton, PA. This fungus will grow and spread under certain conditions. It's helpful to be aware of the places it can show up and what events lead to the need for mold remediation. Some of these include:
- After food is left in a break room refrigerator for several weeks
- After a pipe bursts in the basement boiler room
- When water leaks through the roof after a severe rainstorm
Clues Your Nose Can Pick Up
People in your building may first begin to complain about certain smells in the workplace. Mold often has a pungent, musty odor. Some people may describe it as the smell of wet socks or rotten wood. Another way to think about it is how it smells outside after it rains. People may even say mold has an earthy odor.
Why it Stinks
During particular stages of its growth, mold will release mycotoxin into the air. These organic compounds are a collection of what the fungus consumes to multiply.
How To Get Rid of It
It is vital to call a professional mold cleanup team to get rid of mold. These specialists will use powerful disinfectant to remove the fungus. Plus, to eliminate the smell, the crews will use HEPA air filtration machines. You can do your part too, but ensuring there is good airflow in your building.
The terrible smell of mold comes from mycotoxin release. You can do something about this by enlisting the help of experienced professionals.

Commercial Services - Industrial Hygienists
Do you have a mold problem or just a dirty basement? To answer these questions professionals, need to be consulted to find scientific answers. Industrial Hygienists are specialists in identifying issues in workplaces or public facilities that could pose risk to those occupying the building. They can provide testing, protocols and consulting to help mitigate, remediate or eliminate these issues.
When dealing with mold there are two tests that can be performed to discover if you truly have an issue or not. The first test is the Indoor Air Quality test. During this test a sample of air is taken utilizing an air pump and special filter that traps air particles that will later be analyzed by a lab. Based on the particles collected the I.H. can determine how contaminated the air is. The second type of test is called a lift test. This is used to identify how contaminated surfaces are. A sticky tape is utilized to take a sample to be analyzed by a lab. Either way before jumping to conclusions about mold be sure that you have the proper science being used to back up your decisions.

What You Need to Know About Commercial Insurance
9/23/2019 (Permalink)
Commercial Insurance
Commercial insurance claims following a major damage to a facility can become difficult to manage if you do not have the proper knowledge or vendor involved with the process. Many projects can become bogged down in red tape or even worse, they may result in the insured having to pay fees out of pocket following a loss. Here is what you should know about your insurance prior to a loss:
- Who is your insurance carrier?
- What is your insurance deductible?
- What does your insurance cover you for?
- Do you have mold coverage?
- Do you have any insurance Limits? (for example, do you have a 100,000 cap on contents)
- Are you self-insured?
Having knowledge of all these areas before a loss occurs can greatly streamline how quickly your claim is processed. It will also help you be able to make informed decisions on how to move forward after a major facility catastrophe. The key is to make sure you have a plan, know your coverage, and have a trusted vendor like SERVPRO to help get you back up and running as quickly as possible.
Drying Commercial Spaces - Desiccant Dehumidification
9/19/2019 (Permalink)
Commercial Dehumidification
Commercial spaces often mean larger scale projects with many different factors. Is the space conditioned or unconditioned? Is there adequate power available or will portable power need to be brought in? Does the business own the building or are they a tenant? Finding answers to these questions are critical but what are some questions that pop up after a job has begun?
Due to commercial buildings complexity a proper drying plan needs to be put in place. This means identifying the answers to all the previous questions but also asking questions like, “what materials am I drying, how fast to they need to get dry, what is the best equipment to utilize.” On large scale projects with a variety of materials Desiccant dehumidification is king. Desiccant dehumidification utilizes hot dry air that is ducted from outside to help dry dense materials such as hardwoods, plaster, or lathe more efficiently than traditional dehumidification. They also can handle larger spaces more easily. When you look for a restoration company for your restoration needs, make sure they have the right tools for the job.

Mold in Your Commercial Property
8/14/2018 (Permalink)
